India Office to Foreign Office.—(Received January 5.)

THE Under-Secretary of State for India presents his compliments to the Under- Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and, by direction of the Earl of Crewe, forwards herewith, for the information of the Secretary of State, copy of a telegram from the Viceroy, dated the 4th January, relative to Pien-ma.

SEE my telegram dated the 8th ultimo as to the expedition to Pien-ma. On the 25th ultimo expedition under Mr. Hertz reached Htawgaw, whore, in order to connect ration base, seventy-five rifles were left under a British officer. Expedition left for Pien-ma on the 27th ultimo. Successful bridging of Ngawchang Kha and Hpara My Kha rivers reported on the 29th ultimo, Throughout the march attitude of local people was friendly. Along the Ngawchang the headmen have almost all come in, bringing with them hats and orders of appointment issued by the Chinese. Receipt of late news from Tali and Tengyueh is reported by Mr. Rose, who is at present in Bhamo, to the effect that no movements of troops have been made in the direction of the frontier.
